Learning to Observe Your Own Body

Noticing patterns, keeping notes, and building self-awareness as the foundation of your herbal practice

Most of us move through our days largely unaware of what is happening in our bodies. We notice when something is wrong — when there is pain, illness, or a symptom we cannot ignore — but between those moments, the body hums along largely unobserved. We eat, sleep, move through stress, make our way through seasons of change, and rarely stop to notice the subtler language our bodies speak all day long.

Herbal practice changes this. Not all at once, and not by force — but gradually, through the accumulation of small observations made over time, it develops in you a quality of attention to your own body that most people in the modern world have never cultivated.

This matters for herbalism in a very practical way. Choosing the right herb for a situation requires understanding the situation clearly — not just the symptom name, but the qualities of the experience. Is the tension in your shoulders hot and inflamed, or cold and contracted? Is your digestion sluggish and damp, or dry and irritated? Is your fatigue the wired, depleted exhaustion of someone who cannot wind down, or the heavy, cold tiredness of someone whose energy simply isn’t generating? These distinctions matter for herb choice, and you can only make them accurately if you’ve developed the habit of paying attention.

Body awareness, in other words, is not a soft skill in herbalism. It is a clinical skill. And like any skill, it improves with practice.

This article is a guide to developing that practice — what to observe, how to observe it, how to record it, and why doing so will make you both a better herbalist and, most people find, a generally healthier and more grounded person.
