Water-based preparations for leaves, flowers, and soft plant material

The most ancient, most accessible, and most underestimated preparation in all of herbalism

Before there were tinctures or capsules or standardized extracts, there was hot water and a plant. This is where herbal medicine begins — where it has always begun — and for most of human history it is where it largely stayed. The infusion is the oldest form of herbal medicine in the world, and it remains one of the most effective.

Most beginners underestimate the tea. It seems too simple, too ordinary, too much like something you’d make without thinking before bed. Surely the real medicine must be in the tinctures, the capsules, the more complicated preparations?

It isn’t. A well-made herbal infusion — the right herb, the right amount, prepared correctly and taken consistently — is one of the most potent preparations in an herbalist’s toolkit. Water is a remarkable solvent. It extracts vitamins, minerals, polysaccharides, flavonoids, tannins, bitter compounds, mucilage, and many volatile aromatic oils. For the herbs that water serves well, no other preparation is necessary, and no other preparation is superior.

This article covers everything you need to know to make excellent herbal infusions — the different types and when to use each one, how to prepare them correctly, which herbs are best suited to water-based preparations, and the practical details that make the difference between a tea that works and one that doesn’t.
