Nervous System Guide – The Stress Response Explained
Understanding what actually happens in your body under stress — and why this matters for every herbal decision you make for the nervous system
Stress is the most common reason people come to herbalism for nervous system support. Not anxiety in the clinical sense, not depression, not a diagnosable disorder — just the ordinary, relentless, modern experience of too much, too fast, for too long.
The herbs that address this — the nervines, the adaptogens, the tonics for a depleted nervous system — are among the most widely used in contemporary herbal practice and some of the most misunderstood. People reach for ashwagandha when they’re burned out. They take valerian when they can’t sleep. They drink chamomile when they’re anxious. These are often good instincts. But understanding why those herbs work — what is actually happening in the body under stress and how specific herbs interact with those processes — makes every choice more precise, more effective, and more sustainable over time.

The Stress Response: Built for Survival
The stress response is one of the most elegantly designed systems in the human body. It evolved over millions of years to do one specific thing: keep you alive in the face of immediate physical danger.
The classic scenario is the predator encounter. You are walking through tall grass, you hear a sound, and in a fraction of a second your brain registers threat. What happens next is extraordinary in its speed and precision: your body shifts every available resource toward survival. Heart rate increases to pump more blood to working muscles. Breathing deepens to take in more oxygen. Blood is redirected away from the digestive system and toward the large muscle groups needed for running or fighting. The liver releases stored glucose for immediate energy. Pupils dilate for sharper vision. Pain sensitivity decreases. Immune function is temporarily suppressed — not something you need in the next thirty seconds. The stress hormones adrenaline (epinephrine) and cortisol flood the bloodstream.
All of this happens in seconds, before the conscious mind has fully processed what is happening. The stress response is not a thought. It is a cascade — a finely coordinated physiological shift that prioritizes immediate survival over everything else.
And then, in the original design, the threat resolves. You ran. You fought. The predator left. And the body shifted back to rest — a state of recovery and repair where digestion resumed, immune function restored, inflammation resolved, and the system returned to equilibrium.
The problem is that this is not how most modern stress works.
Two Branches of the Nervous System
To understand the stress response fully, you need to understand the two branches of the autonomic nervous system — the part of the nervous system that regulates involuntary functions like heart rate, digestion, breathing, and immune response.
The Sympathetic Nervous System — “fight or flight”
The sympathetic nervous system is the activating branch. When it is dominant, the body is in a state of mobilization: resources are directed toward action, survival, and immediate response. Heart rate and blood pressure increase. Digestion slows. Blood flows to large muscles. Stress hormones are released. This is the state the body enters under stress.
This state is appropriate and necessary for genuine threats. The problem arises when it becomes the default — when the body spends far more time in sympathetic activation than it was designed to.
The Parasympathetic Nervous System — “rest and digest”
The parasympathetic nervous system is the restoring branch. When it is dominant, the body is in a state of recovery: digestion is active, heart rate slows, immune function is supported, cellular repair occurs, and the system does the maintenance work that keeps it healthy over the long term.
The vagus nerve is the primary carrier of parasympathetic signals throughout the body. It connects the brain to the heart, lungs, digestive tract, and most major organs, and its tone — sometimes called “vagal tone” — is a measure of how well the parasympathetic system is functioning. High vagal tone is associated with resilience, good digestion, emotional regulation, and better immune function. Low vagal tone is associated with chronic stress patterns, poor digestion, inflammation, and emotional dysregulation.
Practices that increase vagal tone include slow, deep breathing, cold water immersion, humming and singing, meditation, and time in nature. Some herbs also support parasympathetic tone, particularly the nervine and adaptogenic herbs.
These two branches are not simply on and off — they exist in a dynamic balance, constantly adjusting to circumstances. A healthy nervous system moves fluidly between them: activated when needed, recovering when it can. The problem of modern chronic stress is essentially a problem of this balance being chronically tilted toward sympathetic dominance, without adequate recovery time in parasympathetic restoration.
The Three Stress Hormones
The stress response is mediated primarily by three hormones, each playing a distinct role in the cascade.
Adrenaline (Epinephrine): the immediate alarm
Adrenaline is released by the adrenal medulla within seconds of perceiving a threat. It is the first responder — the hormone responsible for the immediate rush of the stress response: the racing heart, the surge of energy, the sharpened awareness, the feeling of being suddenly, acutely alive.
Adrenaline acts quickly and clears quickly. Under normal circumstances, once the immediate threat has passed, adrenaline levels drop and the body begins to settle. The adrenaline response is designed for brief, intense activation.
Cortisol: the sustained stress hormone
Cortisol is released by the adrenal cortex slightly more slowly than adrenaline, and it lasts much longer — sometimes hours. Where adrenaline handles the immediate alarm, cortisol manages the sustained response: mobilizing glucose for continued energy, maintaining blood pressure, suppressing non-essential functions like digestion and reproduction, and keeping the immune response in check.
Cortisol is not inherently harmful. It has many essential functions, including a natural daily rhythm — cortisol peaks in the morning to support waking and alertness, then gradually declines through the day. The morning cortisol peak is part of why we feel more alert and energetic in the first part of the day.
The problem is chronic elevation. When cortisol remains elevated day after day, week after week — which happens with chronic stress — its long-term effects are profoundly damaging: impaired immune function, disrupted sleep, blood sugar dysregulation, muscle breakdown, memory impairment, fat accumulation around the abdomen, and eventual exhaustion of the adrenal glands’ ability to produce it at all.
DHEA: the balancing hormone
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is produced alongside cortisol by the adrenal glands and acts in many ways as a counterbalance to cortisol. It supports tissue repair, immune function, mood, and cognitive function. In a healthy stress response, DHEA and cortisol are produced in rough proportion to each other. In chronic stress, cortisol production tends to stay high while DHEA declines — a shift that amplifies the negative effects of cortisol on the body. Many adaptogenic herbs support the cortisol-to-DHEA ratio, which is part of why they are so useful for burnout and chronic stress.
The HPA Axis: the Stress Command System
The coordination of the hormonal stress response runs through a system called the HPA axis — the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands working together as a control loop.
When the brain perceives stress, the hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which signals the pituitary to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which signals the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Cortisol then feeds back to the hypothalamus and pituitary to signal that enough has been produced and to down-regulate further production. This feedback loop normally keeps the stress response proportionate and time-limited.
Chronic stress disrupts this feedback loop. The hypothalamus becomes less sensitive to cortisol’s feedback signal, meaning the “off switch” becomes less effective, and cortisol production stays elevated even when no acute threat is present. Over time, the adrenal glands can become depleted, and the system shifts from chronic cortisol excess to a state where cortisol production is consistently low — a pattern often called adrenal fatigue or HPA axis dysregulation, characterized by persistent exhaustion, difficulty waking, poor stress tolerance, and immune vulnerability.
Why this matters for adaptogenic herbs: Adaptogenic herbs — ashwagandha, rhodiola, eleuthero, schisandra, and others — work primarily on the HPA axis. They help to normalize HPA axis function, improve the sensitivity of the cortisol feedback loop, support adrenal resilience, and over time shift the system back toward a healthier balance of activation and recovery. This is why adaptogens are not fast-acting and why they need to be taken consistently for four to six weeks or more to produce their full effect. They are not addressing a symptom — they are supporting a system.
Acute Stress vs Chronic Stress: A Critical Distinction
Understanding the difference between acute and chronic stress is essential for choosing the right herbal support, because these two states require completely different approaches.
Acute stress
Acute stress is the natural, designed stress response — an immediate, intense activation in response to a genuine challenge or threat. An exam. A difficult conversation. A near-miss while driving. A frightening diagnosis.
The body responds fully, resources are mobilized, and — in a healthy system — recovery follows. Acute stress is not inherently harmful. It is part of normal human life and, in moderate amounts, is associated with growth, learning, and resilience.
Herbal support for acute stress: nervines that act quickly — lemon balm, passionflower, lavender, valerian — can be helpful in the acute phase to support the body’s recovery and prevent the acute response from spinning into prolonged anxiety or sleeplessness.
Chronic stress
Chronic stress is what happens when the stress response is never fully resolved — when activation is the default state and genuine recovery is rare. Financial worry. Relationship difficulty. Demanding work that never stops. A body that carries its trauma and cannot fully let it go. Caregiving without adequate support.
Unlike acute stress, chronic stress does not resolve through a single act of rest. It requires sustained systemic support: changes in how the nervous system is regulated, how the adrenal glands are nourished, how recovery is built into daily life.

What Chronic Stress Does to the Body
The long-term effects of chronic stress read like a catalog of modern health complaints — which is not a coincidence. Chronic stress is one of the most pervasive drivers of illness in contemporary life, and its effects touch virtually every system in the body.
Digestion
Chronic sympathetic dominance suppresses digestive secretions, slows gut motility, alters the microbiome, and increases intestinal permeability. The result is a broad range of digestive complaints: sluggish digestion, bloating, irregular elimination, food sensitivities, and IBS-type patterns. This is the gut-brain axis at work, and it is one of the most important reasons why nervous system herbs so often improve digestion in people who haven’t identified stress as the root of their digestive problems.
Immune function
Cortisol is a powerful immunosuppressant. Acutely, this serves a purpose — immune responses are metabolically expensive and unnecessary for short-term survival. But chronically elevated cortisol leaves the immune system in a state of chronic under-function for acute threats and simultaneously drives chronic low-grade inflammation, because the regulatory mechanisms that would normally dampen inflammation are also impaired. The result is the paradox of chronic stress: more frequent infections on one hand, and more systemic inflammation on the other.
Sleep
Cortisol and melatonin are inversely related — when cortisol is high, melatonin production is suppressed, and the brain’s ability to shift into restorative sleep is compromised. Chronic stress commonly produces a pattern of difficulty falling asleep (racing mind, inability to wind down) or waking in the early hours (particularly the 2–4am window, when cortisol begins its morning rise earlier than it should). Both patterns are characteristic of HPA axis dysregulation.
Cardiovascular system
Chronic elevation of heart rate and blood pressure from sustained sympathetic activation increases the workload on the heart and arterial walls over time, contributing to the development of cardiovascular risk. The inflammatory effects of chronic cortisol elevation compound this.
Blood sugar and metabolism
Cortisol mobilizes glucose from storage to provide immediate energy. When this happens chronically, blood sugar regulation is chronically disrupted, insulin sensitivity is reduced, and fat accumulation — particularly around the abdomen — increases. The pattern of stress-related weight gain around the middle is a direct cortisol effect.
Cognitive function and mood
Chronic cortisol elevation has well-documented effects on the brain: impaired memory consolidation, reduced cognitive flexibility, altered prefrontal cortex function (the area responsible for decision-making and emotional regulation), and changes to the hippocampus, which is central to both memory and mood regulation. Anxiety, depression, brain fog, and difficulty concentrating are all common features of chronic stress.
Hormonal balance
The steroid hormones — cortisol, DHEA, and the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone — share biochemical precursors. When chronic stress demands sustained cortisol production, the body prioritizes stress hormone production over sex hormone production in a process sometimes called the “ortisol steal.” The result is hormonal imbalance — reduced sex hormone levels, menstrual irregularities, fertility effects, and changes to libido — driven not by the reproductive system itself but by the sustained demands of the stress response.
The Body Keeps Score
One of the most important things to understand about the stress response is that the body does not reliably distinguish between physical threats and psychological ones. An approaching predator and an overdue bill register through similar pathways. A car accident and a difficult email can both trigger the cascade. The nervous system responds to perceived threat, and in modern life, perceived threats are constant and often unresolved.
This is why the stress response has become one of the most significant health issues of our time — not because we are in more physical danger than our ancestors, but because the mechanisms that evolved for brief, intense activation are being run continuously in response to psychological stressors that never fully resolve.
Understanding this is not meant to be discouraging. It is meant to be clarifying.
